I can’t remember the last movie I saw. I think it was ‘Across the Universe’ in Kauai nearly a year ago. There just hasn’t been anything out there that appeals to me, but then again, not watching tv or reading the newspaper, how would I know? LOL. There could be some earth-shattering, life-changing cinematography happening outside my window and here I sit oblivious – just me, my MacBook and the invisible intergalactic internet.
So when I got word of the movie Enlighten Up!, I had to have a closer look. Watching the trailer and reading the byline, this could very well be my story. Hell, this could be a LOT of yogis’ story. Skeptic turned devotee travels to India.
I still remember my first yoga class at my gym. The only reason I tried it was because of the name – POWER yoga – and the promise of “yoga butt.” I didn’t care about flexibility, inner peace, a calm mind. I wanted buns of steels and my teacher’s sculpted arms. How I envied those chaturanga dandasana arms. Still do. Well that was the beginning of the end that finds me here today blogging about all things yoga.
It’s sublime. It’s insidious. It gets into the belly of your cells and turns them inside out little by little until it’s so interwoven in your core. I can’t explain how it happens. It just does.
‘Enlighten Up!’ debuted in Maui and is scheduled for screening in major cities in mid-September. Some of the world’s most amazing living gurus appear on screen – B.K.S. Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, Norman Allen, Sharon Gannon, David Life, Gurmukh, Dharma Mitra, Cyndi Lee, Alan Finger, Rodney Yee, Beryl Bender Birch, Shyamdas, Diamond Dallas Page. For that alone, it’s worth watching.
