Many yoga students wash their clothing themselves in a bucket and line dry. But for Rs. 6 – 10 per items, there are small shops that will wash, dry and fold your clothing. Usually within 24-48 hours, you can pick up your freshly laundered clothing wrapped in a neat paper parcel.

There’s a nice laundry service for Rs. 6 per piece located on the Main Road in Gokulam between Contour and Gokulam Roads. It’s acutally better than any laundromat I’ve ever been to!

It’s the end of class. You’re breathing deeply, surrendering the weight of your body into your yoga mat. Breathing in…and out. Letting yourself go.

Who doesn’t feel better after a yoga class? Yoga is the union of the body, mind and spirit. It stabilizes the nervous system, decreases blood pressure, increases flexibility and endurance, and opens you up in ways that you may not have imagined.

Simran used to be a yoga teacher. She loves the practice even though she hasn’t spent much time on her mat lately. (”Yoga on the inside, baby!”) Sarah gets her yoga on every week and knows it does her body good. Read more…

You’ve heard the horror stories – people getting sick after drinking the water. Well, it can be true so you want to be very careful when drinking beverages in India. Buy bottled water and avoid drinking from the tap. If you get a beverage at a restaurant, ask for it without ice. If you purchase a freshly pressed juice, request all fruit, no water. Luckily you can order water home delivery very cheaply.
Telephone: 821-251-4399
Fax: 821-241-7546
Marina water is triple UV sterilized, micro-filtered and ozonated. To begin water delivery service, you place a deposit of Rs. 200 down for the first bottle. Every subsequent 20-liter refill is Rs. 50. Then when you cancel your service, Rs. 150 of your initial deposit is refunded. (This are the prices that were effective in 2005.) If you’re going to be staying in India for awhile, this is the best way to insure you always have a supple of clean, safe water.

If you’ve never had an Ayurvedic massage, there’s no better place to try it than in India. It’s very different than any other type of massage I’ve ever had. Be prepared to leave your inhibitions at the door! The Ayurvedic massage in India that I experienced at the Regalis (Southern Star) versus the one I had stateside was very “open” shall we say. No modest sheet draping or politely averted eyes.

Use of herb-infused oils suited to a person’s ayurvedic constitution or dosha are used liberally. So whether you are Vata, Pitta or Kapha, an appropriate blend of herbs is used to pacify your dosha and bring back balance. The marma (or energy points) are then massaged to release blocked energy, stimulate organ functions and strengthen the immune system. It’s well worth experiencing and a bargain in Mysore. Below are a few places to consider.

Harini of the 3 Sisters

364 Cheluvamba
Agrahara, Mysore 570 024
Telephone: 821-252-2788
A few houses to the right of the Kaveri Hotel in the home with the lilac door, Harini, who is renowned for her deep body massages, will knead you into submission. She uses ropes to support herself as she skates on your oil-slicked body, applying deep pressure on all those tight knots. She charges Rs. 850 for a one and a half hour massage. You will need to make an appointment as she is a very sought after body worker.

Indus Valley Ayurvedic Center

Lalithadripura, Mysore
E-mail: reservations@ayurindus.com
Website: www.ayurindus.com
Telephone: 821-247-3437/3263/3266
Fax: 821-247-3590
