by admin on September 11, 2008

Sept. 10 , 2008
by Johanna Kirk

This month, Sarah Durney threw open the doors of her new studio, Ashtanga Boise, the first local yoga venue with a daily Mysore practice. Competitive skier, rock climber, environmental studies student, firefighter, tango dancer, metal worker, special education teacher … Durney lives a life as multi-dimensional and fascinating as the postures she teaches in her classes. Although her life has unfolded in many directions, she’s remained consistently devoted to yoga since her teens. Yoga, which originally entered her life as a way to heal sports injuries, eventually inspired a spiritual journey that motivated multiple trips to India, where she studies at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute with the innovator of the practice, S.K. Pattabhi Jois and other yoga legends. She relocated to Idaho in 2006 after leaving her job with a Hotshot fire crew. On her most recent trip to India, she decided to open a studio in Boise. EVERY part of the body, so insignificant when seen collectively, but gets all the importance when taken one by one.

This time it is the sense organ of smell the nose and all that it connects with directly lungs, throat, esophagus, ears, eyes and the brain. Did you powder your nose? is what one may ask when they want to know if you are dressed up and ready.

This tiny projection from the face with two hidden tunnels ushering in air that contains Prana Shakti, is the most important part of the body. It serves us non-stop from birth until the last breath! Physical care of the nasal passages, problems with the sinus, throat and lungs is an important part that takes us to an ENT specialist whenever things get wrong.

Pranayama is that part of Ashtanga Yoga which is fully dependent on our capacity to draw in the air, fill up the lungs (which have the capacity to stretch a whole tennis ground!), retain the breath within and expel it out. Read more…

New Guidelines for Ashtanga Teachers Released

by admin on August 15, 2008

An official list of authorized and certified Ashtanga teachers was released this week by the newly renamed K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute (KPJAYI.) Compared to the Ashtanga.com teacher directory, the number of teachers officially “allowed” to teach Ashtanga has been greatly reduced. Also of note in the new KPJAYI guidelines are the following:

  • No Ashtanga-related workshops allowed
  • Requirements for Ashtanga shalas
  • Authorized and certified teacher criteria

Visit the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute website to read about the new guideline details and view the official teacher list.
