Sarah Durney Opens Ashtanga Boise

This month, Sarah Durney threw open the doors of her new studio, Ashtanga Boise, the first local yoga venue with a daily Mysore practice. Competitive skier, rock climber, environmental studies student, firefighter, tango dancer, metal worker, special education teacher … Durney lives a life as multi-dimensional and fascinating as the postures she teaches in her classes. Although her life has unfolded in many directions, she’s remained consistently devoted to yoga since her teens. Yoga, which originally entered her life as a way to heal sports injuries, eventually inspired a spiritual journey that motivated multiple trips to India, where she studies at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute with the innovator of the practice, S.K. Pattabhi Jois and other yoga legends. She relocated to Idaho in 2006 after leaving her job with a Hotshot fire crew. On her most recent trip to India, she decided to open a studio in Boise. Venkatesha and his wife offer a variety of classes at their center including yoga, pranayama, massage, chanting, kriyas and philosophy. The yoga system he teaches is his own and not Ashtanga. His emphasis is on proper alignment and precision and he does not do hands-on adjustments. Known as the “rubber yogi,” his backbending course that runs for 4 weeks for Rs. 12,000 is one of his most popular classes. No drop-ins are allowed.

Yoga India is run by Bharath Shetty who has studied with BKS Iyengar in Pune and is certified by the Indian Yoga Institute, Vivekananda Kendra and International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center. He teaches three main courses: Foundation, Advanced and Teacher Training. The Teacher Training course lasts 6 weeks and is recognized by the Yoga Alliance. An Iyengar-style practice class in the morning from 7:30 to 9:00am and a technical class in the evening from 4:00 to 5:30pm. For beginners, classes are at 10:30am to 12pm and 5:30 to 7:00pm respectively.

New Guidelines for Ashtanga Teachers Released
An official list of authorized and certified Ashtanga teachers was released this week by the newly renamed K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute (KPJAYI.) Compared to the Ashtanga.com teacher directory, the number of teachers officially “allowed” to teach Ashtanga has been greatly reduced. Also of note in the new KPJAYI guidelines are the following:
- No Ashtanga-related workshops allowed
- Requirements for Ashtanga shalas
- Authorized and certified teacher criteria
