Krishna Pattabhi Jois, Leading Expert in Yoga, Dies at 93

MUMBAI, India — Krishna Pattabhi Jois, a prominent and influential teacher who drew a global following that included Western celebrities like Madonna and Sting, died on Monday in his home in the southern Indian city of Mysore, his family said. He was 93.

Known to his followers simply as guruji, a term of respect for teachers, Mr. Jois (pronounced JOYCE) had an ulcer in his throat that made it difficult for him to swallow food, according to Sharhat Rangaswamy, his grandson and the director of his yoga institute. In the days before he died, Mr. Jois was also struck by a urine infection and pneumonia, Mr. Rangaswamy said in a telephone interview.

Where is home? For yoga instructor Dylan Bernstein, “Home is in my yoga practice.” He explains: “When I roll out a mat, I feel really grounded, I feel really centered and at home. I guess home is an internal place.”

Bernstein, who teaches Ashtanga yoga at Yoga Sala in Nişantaşı (www.yogasala.com), has been practicing yoga in Asia and Europe since 2001. Always interested in world religions, especially Zen Buddhist philosophy, Bernstein started yoga when he was a boy of 13 in, in the US. In 2001 he left his 10-year career in childhood education and moved to Vietnam. He moved to India in 2004 and studied Ashtanga yoga with Vijay Amaran in Dharamsala (in northern India). Read more…

Venkatesha and his wife offer a variety of classes at their center including yoga, pranayama, massage, chanting, kriyas and philosophy. The yoga system he teaches is his own and not Ashtanga. Yoga India is run by Bharath Shetty who has studied with BKS Iyengar in Pune and is certified by the Indian Yoga Institute, Vivekananda Kendra and International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center. He teaches three main courses: Foundation, Advanced and Teacher Training. The Teacher Training course lasts 6 weeks and is recognized by the Yoga Alliance. An Iyengar-style practice class in the morning from 7:30 to 9:00am and a technical class in the evening from 4:00 to 5:30pm. For beginners, classes are at 10:30am to 12pm and 5:30 to 7:00pm respectively.
